What is the Dark Academia look?
The dark academia style is an aesthetic rooted in a love for classical literature, intellectual curiosity, and the romanticism of old-world academia. In this style, you’ll find rich, moody tones such as deep browns, forest greens, and dark grays. For types of pieces and fabrics, you’ll see plenty of tweed blazers, tailored trousers, turtlenecks, and vintage-inspired accessories. The style may give you of a scholarly and nostalgic feel. You also may be reminded of historic libraries, gothic architecture, and a quiet rainy day spent inside reading. Hopefully, I can provide you with inspiration and ideas on how to easily style this look.
1. Plaid/Checked Pattern
A plaid or checked blazer is a classic wardrobe staple that effortlessly blends seamlessly with the dark academia look. For this look, I have a checked blazer that contains warm brown tones and clean lines. A well structured blazer will help make any looker smarter, perfect for the academia touch.
I decided to style this look with a simple black dress from Aritzia. This ensures the look will stay simple and not too busy. However, you can style this blazer with jeans for a polished casual look or paired with tailored trousers for a more formal ensemble.
2. Slacks
For this next look, I went with a romantic black blouse that has flowy light-weight sleeves, fitted waited and a delicate square neckline. This blouse provides an effortless way to ease into the dark academia style. I added some gray tailored slacks to complete the look.
Slacks and tailored trousers are the perfect way to elevate any look. Since I’m on the petite side, I usually go with a high-waist to elongate the leg. The dark academia look is supposed to give off a smart look to remind you of a moody learning environment. Slacks do an excellent job at seamlessly blending in with this style.
3. Houndstooth Pattern
If you aren’t the best at pairing together pieces for a specific outfit, then this one is perfect for you! Here I have a houndstooth blazer and skirt set in a classic tweed fabric. This is perfect for the dark academia style. The black and cream color palette, provides a moody and elevated look. The tweed fabric and houndstooth pattern are often used in the dark academia style due to the historic and nod to old-world vintage inspiration it provides. This set works perfectly without being too loud since the houndstooth patten is small and subtle.
